Priority Actions for Smoke-Free Nova Scotia: A Roadmap for Advocacy

Provincial Position Statement

Nova Scotia can lead the way in creating healthier, smoke-free, and vape-free environments. This strategy outlines actionable steps to protect children and youth, regulate the retail environment, expand nicotine cessation support, and strengthen data collection for informed decision-making. This comprehensive strategy sets out clear steps to create smoke-free and vape-free spaces that prioritize the health and well-being of all Nova Scotians.

Municipal Position Statement

While significant progress has been made with smoke-free places, smoking and vaping remain pressing issues that municipalities must continue to address. These behaviours still pose substantial risks to public health and safety, and the gaps in current policies highlight the need for renewed dialogue and action. Municipal policies play a critical role in de-normalizing smoking and vaping behaviours, shaping social norms, and protecting the community. Despite existing regulations, smoking and vaping remain prevalent in some public areas, exposing residents – especially children and youth – to harmful second-hand smoke and vapors.

Creating smoke-free spaces improves community health by reducing smoking rates and supporting those trying to quit. Smoke-free outdoor areas also discourage smoking among children and youth while keeping public spaces cleaner and safer by reducing harmful litter and wildfire risks. Indigenous and First Nations communities use sacred tobacco in cultural and spiritual practices. When creating smoke-and-vape-free policies, it is important to consider Indigenous and First Nations traditions to ensure these policies honour and support their cultural and ceremonial practices.
